河田聡 主任研究員が第8回江崎玲於奈賞を受賞しました。

Dear friends,

Recent earthquakes and tsunami in the northeast part of Japan followed by the troubles with nuclear power plants have seriously affected those who are living in the nearby costal areas. The news about Tokyo area appearing in the overseas channels have generally exaggerated the real situation, which have made our friends and colleagues worry about us. However, we are spending ordinary lives at home as well as at work doing our regular research, teaching and other activities.

Since the nuclear plants in question are located approximately 300km far from RIKEN, we have been observing the amount of radioactive species decreased to a negligible level : only about three times more radiation than the usual value (0.1uSv/hour, which is a much smaller than the dose exposed during an international flight*1). We have been trying to save the electricity, of course, but it is almost nothing compared with the disasters happened in the north and we have not encountered any serious power outages so far except that train service has not been as much precise as Japanese standard. Because of these facts, foreign research scientists in RIKEN who evacuated temporally just after the incidences are now returning back to their own business in RIKEN. Indeed there have been still several aftershocks, but hope to be subsided soon.

We are deeply touched by the emails and calls received from friends from all over the world, who have shown their sympathies and have offered their supports. We would like to thank everyone, and would like to inform that we are leading our usual lives.
